Anderson received his high school diploma from Ashland-Greenwood High School in Ashland, Nebraska, his bachelor of science (cum laude) from Hastings College in Nebraska in 1981, and his master of science in aerospace engineering from Iowa State University in 1983.
Cause of death of Clayson Anderson
He was chosen by NASA as an astronaut candidate in June 1998, and in August of the same year he reported for training. Included are detailed scientific and technical briefings, intensive instruction on the International Space Station (ISS) and shuttle systems, physiological training, ground training prior to T-38 flight training, and learning aquatic and wilderness survival techniques.
Anderson oversaw the creation of the Enhanced Warning and Warning (ECW) system as part of the Shuttle Cockpit Avionics Upgrade (CAU) project prior to receiving a spaceflight mission.

On International Space Station Expedition 4, he served as a crew support astronaut, providing ground assistance to crew families and technical issues. In addition, Anderson is the Astronaut Office Crew Representative for CAPCOM and the International Space Station Power Systems. For International Space Station Expeditions 12, 13 and 14, he served as a reserve flight engineer.
