Margaret Trudeau is the mother of Justin Trudeau, the current Prime Minister of Canada.

Throughout her adult life, Margaret has faced the challenges of bipolar disorder.

Having fought this tough mental illness, Margaret openly shares her journey to inspire others and encourage a daily focus on their mental well-being.

It wasn’t until 2006 that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, realizing that chemical imbalances caused her struggles.

The battle against this illness was challenging, with both depressive and manic states causing significant disruptions in her life.

Ms. Trudeau admits that healing from depression requires the support of loved ones, something she lacked during that time, leading to isolation.

Yet, she highlights that mania, marked by excessive excitement and euphoria, can be equally destructive, impairing rational thinking and intensifying depression.

Talking about her battle with bipolar disorder, she stresses the gradual healing time, opening up, and forgiving oneself and others who may not grasp the experience.

While there are no other illnesses creating Margaret’s life difficult, she is still living with Bipolar Disorder, handling it with years of experience and medical help.

Ms. Trudeau was wed to Pierre Elliot Trudeau, who held the position of Canada’s 15th Prime Minister from 1971 to 1984.

In a CNN interview, she revealed that their marriage was far from perfect, having wed at 22 while he was 51 and fully absorbed in his political responsibilities.

As a result, he wasn’t always present for her during difficult times, and eventually, it led to a no-fault divorce in 1984, leaving her struggling to find her place in society.

The pivotal moment in her mental health was the tragic death of her son, Michael, in an avalanche in 1998, which caused a “complete breakdown.”

All these sour life experiences pushed her to the edge, ultimately her discovering her disease in 2006.

After parting ways with Pierre, Margaret married Ottawa real-estate developer Fried Kemper on April 18, 1984, in a civil ceremony, with her three sons present.

From this marriage, she had two children: a son named Kyle (born in 1984) and a daughter named Alicia (born in 1988). Unfortunately, her marriage with Kemper ended in 1999.

On April 27, 2020, Margaret experienced another unfortunate event as she was hospitalized for smoke inhalation during a fire in her apartment building.
