Chris Minns, hailing from the St George region of Sydney, specifically Penshurst, has had an impressive and diverse career. He began his journey by studying at Marist College Kogarah and later obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of New England. Seeking further education, he pursued a Master’s in Public Policy at Princeton University in the United States.
Throughout his professional life, Minns has been actively involved in various sectors, including working for a youth mental health charity and serving as a firefighter. He has also held significant positions such as assistant secretary of the NSW Labor Party and advisor to the NSW government. Minns joined the Australian Labor Party at 18 and was elected as a member for Kogarah in 2015. Known for his affiliation with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, he is associated with Labor’s Right faction. Minns’ political career took off when he became a Penshurst Ward councillor of the Hurstville City Council in 2004, eventually serving as deputy mayor from 2007 to 2008.
In the 2023 New South Wales state election, he successfully led the Labor Party to victory, ending their decade-long absence from power at the state level. However, controversy followed when the Health Services Union accused the Minns government of being slow to remove the 3 per cent limit on pay rises.
