On the morning of 5 August 2023, Watkins was taken hostage by three other inmates at HM Prison Wakefield and was freed by prison officers six hours later.

The motive for the incident is currently under investigation. Several inmates stabbed Watkins in the neck during the scuffle and were hospitalized in critical condition due to lacerations and blood loss.

Who is Ian Watkins?

Ian Watkins is a Welsh musician and former lead vocalist of the rock band Lostprophets. He was born on July 30, 1977, in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. Lostprophets gained popularity in the early 2000s with hits like “Last Train Home,” “Rooftops (A Liberation Broadcast),” and “Burn Burn.”

However, Ian Watkins’s career and life took a dark turn in 2012 when he was arrested on serious criminal charges. In December 2012, he pleaded guilty to numerous child sex offenses, including the attempted rape and sexual assault of a baby. The details of his crimes were shocking and disturbing, leading to widespread public outrage and condemnation.

In November 2013, Ian Watkins was sentenced to 29 years in prison, with a further six years of extended license, for his crimes. The judge described him as a dangerous sexual predator who posed a significant risk to the public, particularly children. His fellow band members disavowed him and the band dissolved in the aftermath of the scandal.
