Born in San Francisco, California, Jackson attended Syracuse University in New York City, where she joined the school’s literary magazine and met future husband Stanley Edgar Hyman. After graduating, the couple moved to New York and began contributing to The New Yorker, Jackson as a fiction writer and Hyman as a contributor to “Talk of the Town”. The couple moved to North Bennington, Vermont, in 1945 after giving birth to their first child, when Hyman joined the faculty of Bennington College.
