Sheila Oliver was an American politician who served as the Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey. Born on July 14, 1952, in Newark, New Jersey, she has had a notable political career.
Sheila Oliver was a member of the Democratic Party and has held various positions in New Jersey politics. She served in the New Jersey General Assembly from 2004 to 2018, representing the 34th legislative district. During her time in the Assembly, she held leadership roles, including Speaker Pro Tempore and Majority Whip.

In 2018, Sheila Oliver ran for Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey as the running mate of Governor Phil Murphy. They won the election, and she became the first African American woman to serve as Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey.
Before her political career, Sheila Oliver worked as a community development specialist and served on the East Orange City Council. She was an advocate for social justice, education, and affordable housing during her time in public service.
On July 28, 2023, Oliver filled in as the acting governor while Phil Murphy was away on vacation in Italy. Unfortunately, on July 31, she experienced a medical emergency and was admitted to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. In her absence, Nicholas Scutari, the Senate president of New Jersey, took over as the acting governor. Tragically, Oliver passed away the next day, August 1, 2023, at the age of 71.
