George Alagiah was a British journalist and newsreader. He was born on November 22, 1955 in Colombo, Sri Lanka (then Ceylon). Alagiah is best known for his work as a presenter and journalist for the BBC.
He began his career in journalism in 1982 as a foreign correspondent, reporting from various countries including Africa, Asia and the Middle East. He covered important events such as the Rwandan genocide, the Gulf war and the civil war in Somalia.
George Alagiah joined the BBC News team in 1989 and became a key presenter for BBC News at Six in 2007. He was known for his calm and authoritative style of presentation, and his reporting on world events won him widespread recognition and respect.

He was married to Frances Robathan, whom he met at Durham University. The couple have two children, Adam and Matthew. He lived in Stoke Newington, North London.
